This week we are working on the different types of figurative language. Friday the students are to dress as an idiom!

This week I am teaching verb forms. The students are learning the different verb tenses; past, present, and future. They are also learning the perfect verb form as well. Here are some examples.
9/29-10/3- We are focusing on Making inferences. The students are reading their story works and using the articles to make inferences about what the article may be implying.
10/6-10/10- We are focusing on adjectives. The students will understand that an adjective describes a noun. We also discussed comparative and superlative adjectives.
10/13-10/17- We are working on context clues. Students will use clues from the text to determine the meaning of a word. This will allow the students to strengthen their vocabulary. It will also help them keep moving forward when they come across a word they do not know.
10/20-10/24- This week we are working on conjunctions. It is important that the students understand the function of conjunctions and how they are used.
10/27-10/31- This week we focused on using commas in a series. This is one of the rules of commas.
11/3-11/7- Now we are focusing on using commas to separate and introductory element.
11/10-11/14- The students are now learning about inferring character traits through dialogue. We are doing a mini lesson on this topic using a picture book called Verdi. Then the students will apply the skill to the novel we are reading in class.
11/17-11/21- The students are now learning about comparing and contrasting character traits. They are doing a great job!
12/1-12/19- The students did an excellent job on their narrative writing piece. I was very impressed with the creativity of their stories!
1/5-1/9- We are now starting a poetry unit! The students will be learning about figurative language and working to write their own poems.
1/12-1/16- The students learned about proverbs, adages, and idioms this week! Next week they are going to start applying this knowledge into their own poems.
1/19/1/23- The students learned about different types of stanzas and rhyme schemes. They learned how to write a couplet, triplet, and quatrain.
1/26-1/30-This week the students will be writing their own couplet, triplet, or quatrain. They will also learn how to imply and understand the theme of a poem and use it to create their own poem. The students will also be learning how to write a haiku poem and diamante poem.
2/2-2/6- Getting ready for the PARCC
3/2-3/6- The students are learning about how to use synonyms and antonyms in context to understanding the meaning of an unknown word.
3/9-3/13-This week we discussed how to determine the theme of a novel through character challenges.
3/16-3/20-The students learned about different types of sentences such as exclamatory, declarative, imperative, and interrogative.
3/20-3/24-This week the students learned how to expand, reduce, and combine sentences.
